Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by word associations. Ford became attracted to acting in her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her show in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
