O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, the child of Jim and Jan O'Grady as a financial planner. Prior to making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. The first role she had was to model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She first appeared on the big screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was later cast in an actress in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows and appeared in made for TV and independent films. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall, blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. For each of those years she won one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by the Drama Series. Together with her cast she was awarded an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
